What’s in my bag- Nikon Gear Only

Let’s start off with a quick background story…

As you may have seen in other blogs, I have Canon gear but I also have Nikon gear. I started in photography with a strong passion for sports photography. I have covered, high school, college, pro boxing, and rec. league sports. Sports photography is and probably will be one of my biggest passions for a while and I am always looking for new opportunities and hope to cover an NFL or NBA game in the future. #Goals right? So now to why we are here… to show you my Nikon gear.

The List:

Nikon D3S

Sigma 120-300 F/2.8

Tamron 70-200 F2.8

Nikon 20mm F2.8D

The Nikon D3S has been my body from day 1. It can handle high ISO very well, it can shoot 9 frames per second which is sufficient for capturing sports action. Though it is an older camera body, with a release date of 2009, it still is a great choice for someone wanting to get into sports or any fast action photography.

My biggest lens, my best purchase I believe is the Sigma 120-300 f/2.8. It’s a fast lens, has optical stabilization, quick autofocus and a great reach of 300mm. Picking up the lens for around $1,000 and has been my go-to lens for football, soccer, baseball, softball, and some basketball. For the price, it is a great pickup for any sports photographer I think. Now, this wasn’t my first “Sports” lens.

The 70-200 f2.8 I feel should be everyone’s first sports lens or even “pro” lens purchase. 70-200mm is a great focal length for portraits, for nature, possibly macro and great for getting into sports photography. My first sports lens was a 70-200 F2.8 Nikon and loved it. Made the mistake of selling it thinking I was going to make the change from Nikon to Canon for sports since I have picked up Canon gear for video and portraits(future blog to come over Canon gear)… So, with now sticking with Nikon, I traded some Canon gear in and picked up the 70-200 F2.8 just in time for basketball.

Now, the 20mm Nikon D lens is a lens I will never get rid of. The lens was gifted to me by my uncle and quite possibly my biggest reason I love or have a passion for photography. Growing up he was always the family member with the camera gear and I probably never shown interest in it but I was in awe when I saw him pull any gear out at my grandma’s house or my house. A few years back I started reaching out to him, asking him questions about lenses and bodies and I feel like built a new bond over something we both love. With all of that happening, we got to the point that he mailed me out the 20mm as a surprise and I couldn’t be more thankful to have it. I have shot the stars with it many times. Being that it is also a prime and 20mm is all you get, it made me grow as a photographer. Not having the zoom but at the same time, it gave me a new angle that I haven’t worked with before, a very wide angle. I have had fun with it not only under the stars but with sports, behind soccer goals, under basketball goals and even at the top of football stadiums. A lens, that will never leave my bag.

Stay tuned and following along for my future blog over my Canon gear and…

STAY ON THE SHUTTER & Happy New year!
